Forensic Kits & Sexual Assault Services

If you or someone you know has been sexually assaulted Vancouver Coastal Health and Fraser Health offer Sexual Assault Services (SAS) also known as forensic kits (previously known as rape kits). Comprehensive SAS are offered at Vancouver General Hospital, Surrey Memorial Hospital, Abbotsford Regional Hospital, and Sechelt General Hospital. Trained nurses and doctors will be available and on-call 24 hours a day. If you cannot get to these hospitals go to your nearest Emergency Department.

As advised by Fraser Health, before arrival at the hospital try to do the following:

  • Do not pee (if you have to, collect it in a clean container and bring it with you, write
    down what time you collected it).
  • Do not have a poop.
  • Do not eat or drink anything.
  • Do not shower or take a bath.
  • Do not douche or wash your genitals.
  • Do not change you clothes.
  • Do not brush your teeth, floss, chew gum, or brush your hair.

It is okay if you have done any or all of the above, it is important to still come in. Services will still be offered. If you are uncertain whether your condition warrants going to the hospital, please go anyways. It is better to be safe than sorry. SAS are offered at your comfort level and based on your needs.

There are services of for:

  • Unwanted sexual touching by anyone (partner, friend, stranger, etc).
  • Rape (vaginal, oral and/or anal).
  • Physical violence (such as hitting, kicking, biting, shoving, etc) from someone you
    know such as a partner or friend or a stranger.
  • Waking up and not knowing what has happened to you.
